Friardykes

Lammermuir Hills

Friardykes Control Depot is a carbon neutral development providing an office, workshop, welfare and storage facilities for the Crystal Rig Wind Farm located in the Lammermuir Hills, East Lothian.

Aitken Turnbull worked closely with the client to develop a strong design that made use of sustainable materials including sheep’s wool insulation and larch cladding to the walls, recycled slate as well as general construction materials that possessed a high recycled content and low emission factors. We used local materials whenever possible to reduce the carbon footprint during transportation.

The building services were also carefully designed to maximise energy efficiency. Externally, energy efficient lighting was shaded down to avoid light pollution while internally low energy lighting was installed with PIR sensors and dedicated low voltage office equipment was provided. In addition, aerated water taps with proximity sensors are fixed throughout to reduce water use while solar panels on the roof boost the hot water supply. This design also provides a bio-diesel generator for back-up power supply.
