Towngate

Dalkeith

Towngate is a small residential development that includes the restoration of a C-Listed historic cottage alongside nine new townhouses.

Aitken Turnbull designed this development around a shared landscaped court which offers open space, greenery, parking and access to individual properties that lead to subdivided private gardens at the rear. This creates safe and pleasant areas to meet, socialise and play.

Maintaining and enhancing local character was paramount throughout this project. The terrace frontages are reminiscent of the farm buildings that previously stood on the site. In addition, the buildings are kept deliberately low in relation with neighbouring properties and allowing sunlight into the development.

The redevelopment of the C-Listed cottage building, located at the joint of the L-shaped site was also of particular importance. The derelict and deteriorating building was initially surveyed to determine which parts were in good condition. The restoration included major structural work and in order to secure the remainder of the original structure, the foundations had to be underpinned and the wall tied to a new roof structure. The stone walls were repaired and restored using a traditional lime render. New sash-and-case windows with stone surroundings were installed alongside restoring the roof using clay pantiles and natural slate, both to match the original.
