The Chemotherapy and Trials Suite involved the extension and refurbishment of Ward 1 at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh and was completed in 2007.
Aitken Turnbull were commissioned by the NHS Trust and Macmillan Cancer Support to further update and extend facilities of the striking and award-winning hospital building designed by Peter Womersley in 1960.
The Chemotherapy and Trials Suite exploits its setting and is designed to interact with existing hospital buildings. The curved external wall welcoming patients, visitors and staff into the facility. It is clad in treated timber which is layered to emphasise the curve and interact with sunlight.
This centre accommodates a purpose-built Trials Suite and refurbished entrance, chemotherapy and pharmacy areas.
One of the key challenges of this scheme was the continuity of service for the existing hospital facilities. Aitken Turnbull achieved this through careful phasing of the works.
