Aitken Turnbull were commissioned by private clients in 2014 to convert and extend the existing Saltcoats farm steading in Gullane, East Lothian. The site sits within a range of derelict stone farm buildings some of which have already been converted by the current owner.
The brief was to provide a contemporary, flexible 5 bedroom family home whilst still preserving the rural character of the building. The principle entrance and bedroom wing are housed in the existing stone structures with the public rooms and kitchen in new extensions and re-built timber shed.
The building forms create a generous private enclosed garden accessed from all ground floor accommodation and in particular via large structural glazed screens from the Dining Room.
This project has been shortlisted in the following awards since its completion:
Edinburgh Architectural Association Awards 2016 – Regeneration & Conservation Category
Saltire Housing Design Awards 2016 – Alteration Renovation & Extension Category
